Oh hi, we’re Who Gives A Crap. Funny name, serious business. We make sustainable bathroom amenities made from 100% recycled office paper or sustainable bamboo that are good for people and great for the planet. Keeping trees in forests, where they belong – so far we’ve saved 1.5 million trees.
Along with our great toilet roll for hotels that bring sustainability and joy to your business we are impact driven, donating 50% of our profits to charity each year. With the mission to give everyone in the world a toilet these donations go to building loos and proper sanitation. Currently we’ve raised over £7,000,000.
We love toilet paper because for us, it’s our way of making a difference. We started Who Gives A Crap when we learnt that 2.4 billion people don’t have access to a toilet (now 2 billion – yay for progress!). That’s roughly 40% of the global population and means that around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That’s almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes.
We thought that was pretty crap. So in July 2012, Simon, Jehan and Danny launched Who Gives A Crap with a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo. Simon sat on a toilet in our draughty warehouse and refused to move until we had raised enough pre-orders to start production. 50 hours and one cold bottom later, we’d raised over $50,000.
We delivered our first eco bamboo toilet paper product in March 2013 and have been thrilled to keep growing ever since. Not just because our eco bamboo toilet paper is gracing bathrooms across the country but also because we donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world.
Though we’re still growing, and now make other sustainable bathroom amenities than just toilet roll for hotels, we always want to stay true to our roots: toilet humour and making the world a better place.
50% of profits donated!
We invest a lot (like 50% a lot) in helping to make a difference while making the most eco-friendly products we can. Yeah, we’re proud (and our mums are too).
Billions of people lack access to clean water and toilets. It’s a dangerous reality that impacts everything from health and safety to education and the environment. Still, we are confident that this is a problem we can solve if we work together.
The impact on human life. Without proper sanitation systems like toilets, waste ends up in the water communities use for drinking, cleaning and bathing. Using contaminated water can lead to all kinds of infections and diseases – many of which can be fatal.
The impact on the planet. Untreated waste is a huge contributor to methane gas emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gasses. In fact, the water and sanitation sectors account for a whopping almost 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the equivalent of the entire aeroplane industry.
The impact on vulnerable groups. Women, girls and people with disabilities are most likely to get sick, most likely to find themselves in dangerous situations and most likely to have their work or education disrupted by a lack of water and toilets. For example, around the globe, women spend an average of 200 million hours walking to collect water.
