It all started in 1983 with a quest for imperfection
“Being able to see the hands of the maker, the fingerprints of the maker, seeing the texture in the surface of the glass and having things not be perfect, those are some of the hallmarks of my work,” Annie explains. “As a craftswoman, I’ve been influenced by my surroundings. My role is to interpret the majesty of these surroundings to create something beautiful.”
From ‘Starving Artist’ to the Smithsonian
A pioneer in a field that is still male-dominated, Annieglass and Morhauser have relentlessly pursued success despite the challenges of launching with zero capital and managing the rapid expansion of a non-traditional artisanal business. She started out as a starving artist on food stamps and built a luxury glassware line that is so well respected, two pieces from the Annieglass Shells Collection are on permanent display at the Smithsonian in the Luce Foundation Collection of American Craft. Additional pieces are displayed at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, and the Glasgow Museum of Modern Design in Scotland.
Annie developed her own version of the ancient glass forming process called ‘slumping.’ Each plate, bowl, tray, platter, or sculpture begins with a single piece of glass, individually cut. The edges are carefully ground to resist chipping.
The glass is then hand-decorated, set over a custom mold, and heated to extremely high temperatures, draping it into shape. Annieglass luxury hotel dinnerware is durable, sustainable, dishwasher safe, and lead-free.
