Environmental Commitment

Mathy by Bols is based in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes and its wonderful countryside. The logic behind our sustainable development policy quite naturally is the conservation of our environment, in terms of both our business operations and our choice of materials.

Most of the wood used by the company comes from Scandinavia. The Scandinavian climate favours the slow growth of the trees, which significantly increases the end quality. For certain types of hotel furniture for children, we also use woods such as beech and oak. All our timbers come from sustainably managed forests.

In order to reduce our carbon footprint, we have invested heavily in insulating our buildings (offices and workshops), and in high tech heating systems that enable us to recycle wood scraps and use them as fuel. This investment significantly reduces our fossil fuel consumption.

Regularly in search of technological innovations, our finishing unit uses the latest developments in water-based paint. This paint, which is almost solvent-free, is much better for the health of our workforce and young customers and represents a real leap forward in terms of eco-friendliness and health.

Creating a bedroom for children or teenagers involves a number of stages. At Mathy by Bols, we do everything possible to ensure that we all work together to produce hotel furniture for children with an impeccable finish that is consistent with the designer’s original idea. From the outset, the company has employed designers with very different perspectives to create its furniture. Professional men and women with wide experience in the art of creating excellence in furniture, our designers create children’s bedrooms which are also spaces in which to live and grow. The eclecticism of our designers produces a very varied, innovative catalogue that is always consistent with the philosophy on which our work has been based for more than de 25 years.

The company invests heavily in its human resources and the relationships between all its people. The craftsmen and carpenters who make up the team from across the generations work closely together, day after day, and pass on their know-how in a genuine willingness for continuous improvement and the spirit of a family business. The spirit within the factory is one of always working in close collaboration. Prototypes are made of every item of hotel furniture for children developed by one of our designers, and these are duly tested and commented on by everyone in the workshop and the commercial team before being put into production and marketed. Eco-Design

Eco Design is a complementary approach to Eco Conception. It means going beyond the simple view of cost in order to work on the value and functionality of the product. Matching a product exactly to its function also limits the environmental impact. When we design our hotel furniture for children, we study each element in it, as well as the methods of assembly and transport, in order to optimise its durability and minimise its impact on the environment to the most eco-friendly level possible. • Eco-design
This collection incorporates new uses that evolve over time. The collection is part of the Montessori pedagogy and offers scalability, using kits, which allows products to be used longer.

• Eco-conception
From the design phase, resources are optimised for manufacturing in order to minimise the environmental impact of the hotel furniture for children and other products.

• Quality raw materials
Our solid woods and our E1 MDFs are PEFC certified (wood from sustainably managed forests) and our paints are water-based.

• Optimised manufacturing
The wood-cuttings are optimised in order to achieve the least possible waste, the parts are standardised in order to facilitate the principle of scalability. There are very few scraps and the little generated is used in particular to heat the workshops.

• Rationalised transportation
The products are sent in the form of kits in order to transport as little volume as possible. Thus, the environmental impact of the hotel furniture for children and other products is reduced in order to be as ecological as possible. Our cardboard packaging is recycled and our pallets are made with our scrap wood.

• A possible end of life
The end of life of the products is postponed to the maximum thanks to the scalability of the collection. The products can be sold second-hand because the woods are very resistant, durable and of high quality. Otherwise they can be used as firewood instead of throwing them away. In addition, the fact that the product consists of a single material, wood, facilitates its recycling.

Fairly unusual in its sector, Mathy by Bols is a hotel furniture for children manufacturer that has been able to solve the difficult problem of producing a high volume, quickly and with short, guaranteed lead times, while also maintaining the quality of genuine craftsman-made furniture. The Mathy by Bols catalogue offers a wide variety of products in many different colour ranges. Because each family and each child are unique, we want to offer you the widest possible choice.

Our first investment is in the human resource in our factory. We believe that work must be organised in a manner that respects the men who shape the furniture that will delight your children. Mathy by Bols employs almost 40 people, including many young people, to whom we are transferring our carpentry know-how and the enthusiasm to uphold the values of passionate, responsible craftsmanship.

“Produced by Mathy and Distributed by Bols”, it is already more than 25 years since Jules Mathy and Jean-Marie Bols created the furniture company bearing their names (1987). Initially local, their ambitions are now European and even global. In just a few years, exports have grown from 10 to 85% and more than 10,000 items of hotel furniture for children are produced annually. Mathy by Bols retains a local manufacturing base, but its main growth can be seen in increases in market share in neighbouring countries and beyond. And this is without ever compromising on the quality and innovation on which its reputation and increasing success are founded.

Since our workshops were established, we have performed a dual role. On the one hand, we design, manufacture and distribute our own hotel furniture for children collections. And on the other hand, we respond to a wide range of sub-contracted orders from other furniture manufacturers or for exhibition equipment in wood, and special orders from groups.
