Could you share the story behind Enchanted House Beds? What inspired the creation of the brand, and how has it evolved since its inception?

Stuart Cann is our company owner and his whole career has been in bed manufacturing, working at a number of the leading bed and mattress brands in the country from Sprung Slumber to Vispring, and over the years had amassed all sorts of insights into the ingredients that really do make the most difference to a good night’s sleep.  Stuart started small, making one mattress a day in a small facility, to now employing 36 people (and increasing to 40 this month).  Last year we completed a big extension to the new factory.  Learning and inspiring every day with new products for bedroom interiors including stylish bedsteads (see image) to adjustable and ottoman features too. Talking to Stuart himself:

“The single most special aspect to our mattresses has to be the hand teased Dartmoor wool. And it’s special for lots of reasons. Firstly, it’s very rare to find it in mattresses, and when you do, it’s typically only mattresses mid-way in the range and upwards. You’ll find it in every one of ours though. Secondly, flock and family traceability. We’ve joined hands with our very own family-run farm who’ve bred Dartmoor sheep for over a hundred years. That means we know exactly where and from whom our fleece comes, down to the field and the flock. And thirdly, our wool is incredibly sustainable. Not only is it natural and locally sourced to keep our carbon footprint small, but we treat the sheep and their fleece with kindness. We only shear sheep bred for wool, and we use only the highest quality blend of lengths. We wash and clean it in the UK and card it ourselves back in Devon, so it’s fluffed up to get the most out of every ounce. It’s the most comfortable core ingredient to sleep on that I’ve found.”

What are the core values and principles that guide your company in terms of quality and craftsmanship?

The quality of our all our products is paramount to our success, it is why customers come back and buy from us again.  As Enchanted House has grown, our processes and procedures are constantly improving and evolving as we develop in all areas of beds and interiors. The key for us is to put our customer first, understanding their needs and always putting them at the heart of what we are doing.  We invest in our employees and ensure that they are fully trained to high standards, continually supporting and developing to ensure that hand crafted techniques we put in place across our range become a signature of our quality.

Have you noticed any specific trends in bedding or sleep preferences in recent years, especially post-pandemic? How are you adapting to those changes?

In the post-pandemic times, there is a trend away from the use of foams and synthetic materials and towards a much more traditional and natural filled mattresses, which is fantastic news as we only put natural ingredients into our products!  We do our research so that all our customer facing employees are fully trained and able to answer questions about how natural ingredients aid sleep and keep our bodies supported and comfortable all night long.

With the increasing demand for sustainability in hospitality, how does Enchanted House Beds address eco-friendly materials or processes in your mattress offerings?

As a responsible business, we are conscious that we need to look after the lifecycle of our products, providing only the finest and 100% natural ingredients within our mattresses.  This not only provides a better night’s sleep as temperature is regulated and moisture is wicked away, but all the materials after the mattress has reached the end of its life can be recycled.  For example, the steel which makes the pocketed springs which can be repurposed, and all the natural ingredients can be either be made into carpet underlay, plant insulation, pet bedding and eventually compost down into the earth with no adverse effect.
