Can you share the story behind your journey into sculpture and artistic design?
My journey into art has always been deeply personal, rooted in my childhood experiences. Growing up, I spent countless hours gardening with my parents and grandparents, and I’ve always been drawn to landscapes and plants in my work. Whether I’m walking through the serene woods of Hoge Veluwe in the Netherlands or along the rugged coasts of Cornwall, the natural world has continually inspired me. My latest piece, BERM, draws directly from the wild, layered greenery that lines roadsides in Delfland, where I ride my bike from spring to autumn. I capture the layering of plants, the beauty of nature’s cycles, and the essence of the seasons in my wall sculptures. I see myself as a ‘professional daydreamer,’ creating visual experiences that blend natural shapes with rich, textured paints. What excites me most is creating unique, custom pieces tailored specifically for a space, which is why working with hospitality designers to enhance their environment is so rewarding.
How would you describe the artistic philosophy behind your work?
My approach sits at the intersection of painting and sculpture. I use flat planes to construct a stage-like environment, layering these elements to create a dynamic interplay of revealing and concealing. The layered compositions invite viewers to look deeper, unveiling hidden botanical forms. While painting and blending colors, I incorporate memories of the scent of damp earth, the weightlessness of fluffy seeds, and the playful dance of speckled patterns across the surface of leaves. I prefer to create large-scale works that immerse the viewer, allowing the artwork to engage with its environment and architecture. These large-scale pieces invite a more intimate connection and offer a profound experience for anyone who interacts with them.
What emotions or experiences do you aim to evoke through your sculptures?
My primary goal is to create a visual experience that evokes beauty and positivity. Depending on the space and the client’s needs, I design works that are either calming or energizing. I work closely with hospitality clients to ensure that the pieces align with their brand identity and the overall thematic vision of their space. The experience I aim to create through my sculptures is one that enhances the atmosphere of a hotel or venue, making it feel both unique and unforgettable.
How would you ensure that sculptures maintain their integrity in high-traffic hospitality environments?
Maintaining the integrity of my artwork in high-traffic environments is crucial. I carefully select durable materials and apply protective coatings to ensure longevity. Additionally, I strategically place each piece to minimize wear and damage, ensuring that it remains pristine throughout its lifecycle. I also consider the ease of maintenance and cleaning, ensuring that each piece remains beautiful and sustainable in the long term.
Can you share a memorable project where your artwork transformed the space?
One of my current projects involves a large 6 x 3-meter suspended wall sculpture for a luxury Canadian fashion brand’s new store in Amsterdam. The piece features a subtle color palette of patina greens, soft turquoise-grays, and warm beige and ochre tones. My goal is to create a calming, serene atmosphere, while also infusing the space with a hidden, vibrant energy. The twisting line of the composition allows visitors to weave underneath the piece, discovering its hidden details as they move through the space. It’s designed to create a dynamic and memorable experience for all who interact with it.
This piece is set to be installed in May 2025.
