We often use them interchangeably: health, wellness and well-being.  But in spite of their closeness and apparent similarity, these words have distinctions and employing them properly is the difference between following the trends and understanding the nuances of how well your physical site is supporting the pursuit of a healthful lifestyle.

Health can have a number of definitions or meanings, but The World Health Organisation (WHO) clarifies that “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”  In this way, health can be seen as an end goal or objective, one that WHO says is a fundamental right of every human being.

Well-being, on the other hand, brings much more into account for a holistic view and it can be experienced by both individuals and societies. WHO explains in its Glossary of Terms (2021) that well-being “encompasses quality of life and the ability of people and societies to contribute to the world with a sense of meaning and purpose. Focusing on well-being supports the tracking of the equitable distribution of resources, overall thriving and sustainability. A society’s well-being can be determined by the extent to which it is resilient, builds capacity for action, and is prepared to transcend challenges.”  In short, it is the term to describe the intersection of physical, emotional, social, financial and a variety of other factors and influences and their resulting impact.

Wellness is, as defined by the Global Wellness Institute, “the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.”  It can also refer to an approach to healthcare that is based on the prevention of illness and the keys to longevity as opposed to an emphasis on the treatment of diseases.

Is your facility committed to one, two or all three?  What equipment, programs, or materials are there to promote well-being and which are provided to support health or wellness?  Being mindful of each is just the start.  Engaging and establishing your studio or hotel as a destination for the pursuit of healthful activities means appropriate decision-making on everything from food and beverages to fitness offerings to in-room amenities.
