At the core of who we are, we believe in doing good for our planet. Since day one, we’ve worked on designing products that not only have a positive impact on your skin but are kind to the planet too. While not all of our products are 100% recyclable yet, 2023 marks the beginning of a new chapter for us and our environmental goals!

We’re launching a new partnership with CleanHub to work towards closing our waste loop and becoming plastic neutral. CleanHub is a company dedicated to free the planet of plastic pollution. They work with global partners to recover plastic waste before it can enter the environment. Our shared initiative with them will create circularity by helping us recover the same amount of waste we produce while simultaneously protecting our oceans!

We chose to partner with CleanHub because of our shared core values. CleanHub believes in transparency and has obtained several certifications to ensure they offer fair pay and safe working conditions for their employees. Their code of conduct is drawn from: FLA (Fair Labor Association, USA), ETI (Ethical Trading Initiative) UK, and SA8000 (Social Accountability Intl USA-Europe).

CleanHub also recently became the first plastic credit system to be verified by TÜV SÜD, an industry-leader in environment impact auditing. TÜV SÜD provides a third-party verification that CleanHub has the competence, consistency of operation, and impartiality to issue plastic credits.

We’re so excited and proud to be tackling the plastic pollution dilemma alongside CleanHub!

Let’s get into exactly how our partnership works:

First, we started off with a goal to recover 5,874 lbs of plastic from entering our waterways! This number corresponds roughly to how much waste is produced at CLE in a year. Then, CleanHub’s recovery system gets to work on renewing and recycling that same quantity of waste. Below is a live tracker of where we stand on that goal:

CleanHub’s system is made up of a network of waste collection hubs in different high-impact coastal regions around the world. We selected their Recity Collection Hub based in Pondicherry, India because it is co-founded by women, helps to create sustainable and dignified jobs for the local community, and tackles one of the largest waste gateways in the world.

Did you know? Southeast Asia is the gateway for more than 80% of plastic that enters our oceans!

As we speak, Recity’s staff in Pondicherry is working hard towards our goal. They take care of waste sorting and transportation, intercepting both recyclable and non-recyclable plastic before it can enter the environment. Their collection efforts not only help to keep India clean but also provide local communities with access to waste management for the first time, to prevent practices like open dumping.

After the waste has been collected, it is sorted into different categories so each material can be disposed of correctly. Recyclable plastic is sold to local recyclers, while non-recyclable plastic is sent for “co-processing”. Co-processing is a waste management system in which waste materials are converted into alternative fuels and/or raw materials. This system utilizes the heat to both destroy and win back energy from waste that has no place in a circular economy.

Did you know? Recity has been able to collect 80,267 kg of waste. That’s the equivalent of 8,026,694 plastic bottles!

Thanks to the innovative work at CleanHub and Recity, we’re making serious progress towards full circularity at CLE by reducing our plastic footprint all while supporting creative climate solutions and local partnerships. We’re thrilled to be supporting a company like CleanHub and can’t wait for what’s to come in our new climate collaboration. Keep up with our live tracker to see how much waste we’ve recovered so far and stay tuned for more climate updates!
